Organizing for America
On Thursday May 27th at 7:00 p.m. we are having a Regional OFA grassroots meeting and training in Keene at the home of Jaime Judd 25 Cottage St. Keene NH o3431
(off Washington St. near the Keene Recreation center, park near the triangle on Washington, etc.).
you can sign up at my.barackobama.com
As grassroots, we will be “planting” a network of community leaders and members, so please come and be part of this new movement of political community organizing, we are needing you.
Our first community event will be a short canvass on Saturday, June 5th in the morning from 10:00 to noon.
We will be canvassing from three locations:
Keene:
At the Home of Beverly Lachman, 31 Robbins Road 352-2009
Westmoreland:
at the home of Paul Berch, 956 River Rd. 399-4960
Winchester:
At the home of Harriet and Art Charland, 68 Kapper Drive, 239-6521
We will be talking to first time voters from the 2009 election. If you don’t like to talk face to face, you can help by driving someone around for two hours.
If we get organized we will stave the tide on the negativity coming from Ms Palin, Fox News etc. and keep moving politics toward the positive things we all worked for during the election. Obama is working to turn the boat, but he cannot do it without us.
Please let others know about these events, and hope to see you there for one or both.
Thanks,
Julia Ferrari

Cheshire County Democrats Book Club
We had a good meeting last night for our discussion of the excellent book, The Age of American Reason by Susan Jacoby. Thank you Harriett for that recommendation.
In April we are going to discuss the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. The recommended book is The Annotated U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence, by Jack Rakove. However, if you are not inclined to read that book, just read something on the topic, or the source documents themselves, and come join the discussion. We are going to meet on Wednesday evening, April 21, 6:30 PM in the food court at Colony Mill Marketplace. I hope you can join us. And, we are always looking for suggestions for our next book, from members of the group, or others. Please let me know if you've read something interesting that you think the book group might enjoy.

Cheshire County Summit
Saturday March 13
Keene Public Library - Kay Fox Room
1:30 PM - 5 PM
Summits from the other counties in New Hampshire have had terriffic break out sessions focused on local planning for the upcoming Fall Elections! With 2010 being a critical election year because of the Census and redistricting and far fewer resources available to us than in 2008, it is extremely important that we have solid local organizing and strategic planning.
We hope you will be able to join us and look forward to seeing you there!

Additional topics to be discussed include: Extending the lifeline to jobless workers, rebuilding America's schools, roads and energy systems, increasing aid to state and local governments to maintain vital services and jobs, and creating a climate where banks will begin lending to small and medium businesses so they can create local jobs.

We had a great discussion of Game Change last week. What an interesting book. Thanks to all of you who were there for the discussion.
For March, we will be reading The Age of American Unreason by Susan Jacoby. Susan Jacoby is the author of the Freethinkers: Secularism in America, which we read and enjoyed several years ago. I'm looking forward to her new book. We will meet on Wednesday evening, March 24, 6:30 in the food court at Colony Mill Marketplace.
Hope to see you there.
Linda Cates
From The New Yorker
Identifying herself as a "cultural conservationist" (but by no means a cultural conservative), Jacoby laments the decline of middlebrow American culture and presents a cogent defense of intellectualism. America, she believes, faces a "crisis of memory and knowledge," in which anti-intellectualism is not only tolerated but celebrated by those in politics and the media to whom we are all "just folks." The Internet, for all its promise, is too often "a highway to the far-flung regions of junk thought." Meanwhile, twenty-five per cent of high-school biology teachers believe that human beings and dinosaurs shared the earth, and more than a third of Americans can’t name a single First Amendment right. In such an environment, Jacoby argues, the secular left and the religious right can have no fruitful dialogue on issues like the separation of church and state. She offers little hope that the situation will improve, opining that, despite increasing levels of education, "Americans seem to know less and less."

Working Families Healthcare Reform
We will identify current legislative proposals, the current political landscape and our most strategic action points. Our goal is universal healthcare and healthcare as a human right! Join us to work toward that end. I look forward to seeing you.
Jaime
There's too much at stake to stop now. Every day that passes without health care reform:
6,821 people lose their health insurance
2,548 people go bankrupt due to medical bills
123 people die because they can't get the care they need
A December New York Times poll shows that, despite the attacks of recent months, the American public supports the public option 59% to 29%. And a recent Research 2000 poll found 82% of people who supported President Obama in 2008 and Scott Brown for Senate last week also support the public option.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the public option will save taxpayers anywhere from $25 billion to $110 billion and will save billions more when private insurers compete to bring down premium costs.
It is very likely that the public option could have passed the Senate, if brought up under majority-vote "budget reconciliation" rules—for which it would clearly qualify as budget-related.
