Cheshire County Democrats - Candlelight Memorial for the Homeless

Candlelight Memorial for the Homeless

Keene-On the first day of winter and the longest night of the year, Monday, December 21st, Monadnock region residents are invited to join a candlelight vigil to remember those in NH who are homeless and those who have passed due to homelessness and hardship in our communities.  The event will provide participants the opportunity to remember loved ones and share stories.  After the memorial service will be a time to reflect on the root causes of homelessness and ways we can work to end homelessness.  The Keene Vigil will be held in conjunction with similar gatherings across NH and the country.  The National Coalition for the Homeless, the national sponsor, works to bring about the systemic changes necessary to prevent and end homelessness and to protect the rights of people experiencing homelessness.  This years Keene co-sponsors of the candlelight vigil are: Working Families Win, The Community Kitchen, Southwestern Community Services Homeless Services Program, The Monadnock Center for Violence Prevention, Inc., and Monadnock Family Services.

These groups who offer shelter, food, clothing and support to the many families and individuals in our region are experiencing increased need for their services this year.

The Community Kitchen requests volunteers for their special holiday meal distribution on December 20th and 21st.  People can volunteer and then come directly to the candlelight vigil, which follows the meal distribution.

Donations for local service organizations will be collected at the vigil.  Please consider donating: Pillows, paper towels and toilet paper, cleaning supplies, household furniture, blankets and linens, hats, gloves, winter coats and boots.

The Candlelight Vigil will be held at Keene Central Square, from 5:00- 6:00pm, on December 21st.  Contact Jaime Contois at 603-504-2906 or Jaime@wfwin.org for more information or to make a donation.

Cheshire County Democrats Book Club

We had an excellent discussion about Afghanistan tonight ( The Punishment of Virtue: Inside Afghanistan After the Taliban by Sarah Chayes) and then rushed home to watch the President's speech. If you haven't read this book, we highly recommend it. It's a fascinating look at Afghanistan.

For January, we will be reading Too Big to Fail: The Inside Story of How Wall Street and Washington Fought to Save the Financial System---and Themselves, by Andrew Ross Sorkin. We will meet on Tuesday night, January 12, 6:30 PM in the Foodcourt at Colony Mill Marketplace. I hope you can join us.

We are always looking for good books to read, so if you have a recommendation, please let me know.

Linda Cates

Reviews of Too Big To Fail

"Andrew Ross Sorkin pens what may be the definitive history of the banking crisis."

-The Atlantic Monthly

"Andrew Ross Sorkin has written a fascinating, scene-by-scene saga of the eyeless trying to march the clueless through Great Depression II."

-Tom Wolfe

"...Sorkin has succeeded in writing the book of the crisis, with amazing levels of detail and access."

-Reuters

"Sorkin can write. His storytelling makes "Liar's Poker" look like a children's book."

-SNL Financial

Product Description

A real-life thriller about the most tumultuous period in America’s financial history by an acclaimed New York Times Reporter

Andrew Ross Sorkin delivers the first true behind-the-scenes, moment-by-moment account of how the greatest financial crisis since the Great Depression developed into a global tsunami. From inside the corner office at Lehman Brothers to secret meetings in South Korea, and the corridors of Washington, Too Big to Fail is the definitive story of the most powerful men and women in finance and politics grappling with success and failure, ego and greed, and, ultimately, the fate of the world’s economy.

“We’ve got to get some foam down on the runway!” a sleepless Timothy Geithner, the then-president of the Federal Reserve of New York, would tell Henry M. Paulson, the Treasury secretary, about the catastrophic crash the world’s financial system would experience.

Through unprecedented access to the players involved, Too Big to Fail re-creates all the drama and turmoil, revealing never disclosed details and elucidating how decisions made on Wall Street over the past decade sowed the seeds of the debacle. This true story is not just a look at banks that were “too big to fail,” it is a real-life thriller with a cast of bold-faced names who themselves thought they were too big to fail.
